Articulation/Phonology
A speech sound disorder occurs when a child continues to make speech errors past the expected age. Every sound has a different range of ages when the child should make the sound correctly. Speech sound disorders include problems making sounds (articulation), or organizing speech sounds into sound patterns (phonological processes). Adults can also have speech sound disorders. -
Expressive Language Disorders
Expressive language disorder is a communication disorder in which there are difficulties with verbal and written expression. It is a specific language impairment characterized by an ability to use expressive spoken language that is markedly below the appropriate level for the mental age, but with a language comprehension that is within normal limits. -
Receptive Language Disorder
Receptive language is the language your child understands. Children with a receptive language disorder have difficulty following directions and processing information. Receptive language disorders may coexist with expressive language disorders. -
Auditory Processing Disorder
Auditory Processing is a disorder in which the brain and ears do not communicate effectively, making it difficult to interpret the sounds that make up speech. This can result in speech, language, and academic problems, including spelling, reading, writing, and speaking skills. -
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disorder that affects behavior, communication, social interaction, and learning, and can range from mild to severe. -
Stuttering
Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the normal flow of speech is disrupted by frequent repetitions or prolongations of speech sounds, syllables, words or by an individual's inability to start a word. -
Down Syndrome
Children with Down syndrome have strengths and challenges in development of communication skills, including receptive (understanding) language and expressive (speaking and composing sentences) language skills and reading. It takes a team to help children and adolescents progress well in speech and language including speech-language pathologists, physicians, classroom teachers, special educators, and families. -
Apraxia of Speech
Apraxia of speech, also known as verbal apraxia or dyspraxia, is a speech disorder in which a person has trouble saying what he or she wants to say correctly and consistently. It is not due to weakness or paralysis of the speech muscles (the muscles of the face, tongue, and lips). The severity of apraxia of speech can range from mild to severe. -
Dysarthria
Dysarthria is a group of speech disorders caused by disturbances in the strength and coordination of the muscles of the speech mechanism as a result of damage to the brain or nerves. The result is severe articulation and phonological deficit. Both children and adults can have dysarthria. -
Stroke
A stroke can result in aphasia, or language impairment, significantly impairing the ability to communicate. A person with aphasia may have trouble with speaking, listening, reading and/or writing. -
Tongue Thrust/Myofunctional Therapy
With orofacial myofunctional disorder, or "tongue thrusting," the tongue may lie too far forward during rest or may protrude between the upper and lower teeth during speech, swallowing, and at rest. A child with OMD may look, speak, and swallow differently than other children the same age. -
Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking®
Visualizing and Verbalizing is a learning program that helps students improve reading comprehension, and higher order thinking by developing the ability to create concept imagery for the language they read and hear, and to create mental representations for the whole imagery. This concept imagery is essential to good language comprehension skills.
